This scenario is set in an alternate historical timeline, where a continuous state of threat and war has carried on past the 20th century and into the present. NATO and its allies have been facing warfare and violent threats in the form of terrorism, piracy and civil wars, as well as conventional warfare between major players such as China, the USSR, North Korea, and Brazil. The constant conventional and asymmetric warfare has led to a massive increase in military spending across the world, leading to much larger and powerful militaries than those that are seen today. These are comprised of ultra-modern equipment and previously cancelled projects and weapons systems. Other technologies and weapon systems of the 20th century were also mass-produced and can still be found in the front lines today due to the higher demand, leading to cold war-era relics fighting alongside and against modern opponents.

With the majority of the US's forces concentrated in other sections of the globe, such as the Pacific, South America and Africa, the USSR has decided to make a move. After an armed conflict a few decades ago, NATO held the Warsaw Pact back from conquering Europe, and even pushed the Communists back in some areas. After the threat of nuclear war hung over the public, demonstrations, economic factors, and diplomatic pressure allowed the two giants to sheathe their swords and reach an agreement- both had bigger fish to fry in other arenas. The frontlines in Europe and the frigid waters of the Atlantic grew quiet.
Now, with its rival spread thin, the Soviets are once again active, seeking to finish what they started in Norway. Their goal is to pressure the country into a state of submission, a puppet the Soviets could funnel cash and materials into in exchange for usage of its valuable ports.
This stepping stone would prove a major disaster for NATO, increasing the Pact's coverage of the Atlantic massively. Their aggressive diplomacy will prove to be a miscalculation, as even with inferior local numbers, the Americans and their allies will always prove a resourceful and dangerous opponent...
