Map design - Lighting
By 3kliksphilip
I discuss lighting in Hammer, for use in games.

I apologise in advance for any black blocks shown in this video. A recent youtube update (in the past couple of weeks) caused this, hopefully they'll sort it out since these videos were originally not corrupted, nor are the versions that I uploaded in the first place.

Adding the sun to your map (Basic)

Still applicable to CSGO. If you have black shadows on things, you haven't added the light_environment to your map yet, as this is what produces the sunlight. It doesn't matter where it's placed in the level- only the direction it points matters, as with sunlight, all the light is heading in the same direction.
Advanced sunlight properties

QUICK NOTE: CSGO has an enhanced lighting system. It only affects sunlight, and the only difference it will make is to the lightmap scale. Even if you made the lightmaps 10000 in size, it will still look nice up-close in-game since the lighting is calculated in real-time. However, as you move further away, this real-time lighting is replaced with baked in, lightmap-based lighting, so this tutorial still holds true.
Lighting theory

Even if you're not interested in mapping, you may still find this video interesting as it explains colour schemes. I'm sure you're aware that blue and orange makes everything look nice!

If you'd still like to use mud as the ground texture then you can adjust the exposure settings using this tool https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Env_tonemap_controller

I had the ground texture as mud and when i looked at the ground the screen would go blinding white.

It looks okay. Increase the brightness value to 900, and make the ambient lighting colour blue and with a brightness of 400 or so
