Goa

City-State Trait: Your districts on or next to Coast tiles provide +2 Faith. (This is the trait of Goa in the Path to Nirvana scenario)

City-State Type: Religious

History:
With the dismantling of the Bahmani kingdom in 1482, Goa came under the control of Yusuf Adil Shah, king of Bijapur, who reigned when the Portuguese arrived in India. At the time, Goa was an important boarding point for Indian pilgrims to Mecca, but it was mostly an unrivaled trading port on the west coast, apart from Calicut. In particular, it was a center for importing Arabian horses from Ormuz, vital goods for the Dekkan kingdoms in perpetual war. The place was easily defendable by any power that had control of the seas, as the rivers that encircle the region could only be forded at one point that had been deliberately infested by crocodiles. The Portuguese attacked on February 10, 1510 under the command of Afonso de Albuquerque. A Hindu ascetic who predicted the fall of the city and the garrison of Ottoman mercenaries being outnumbered, the city surrendered without a fight, and Albuquerque entered it in triumph, acclaimed by the Hindu population. Three months later, Yusuf Adil Shah arrives with 60,000 troops, forced the fording, and blocks the Portuguese in their boats from May to August, until the end of the monsoon allows them to take the sea In November, Albuquerque returned with larger forces and, after reducing a desperate resistance, took the city back, allowed his soldiers to loot it for three days, and had the entire Muslim population massacred. Goa is the first Portuguese establishment in Asia. Albuquerque imagines it as a colony and a naval base, unlike the fortified trading posts that had been established in some Indian ports. Goa becomes the capital of all the Portuguese empire in the East.

Compatible with Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm.

The story of mangazeya is really very interesting! Thanks for that. I gladly add it to my list.

Could your next City-State be Mangazeya? It was called "The Baghdad of Siberia." Russians once belived the legend of Mangazeya to be a myth, but they have found buildings there. I suggest you look it up.
