History:
Dilmun is a country mentioned throughout the history of ancient Mesopotamia since the 3rd millennium BC. AD until the middle of the first millennium BC It is located according to the texts in the Arabian Gulf, on a commercial road of importance between Mesopotamia and Indus, near the sea, near artesian springs. There is agreement to locate it more precisely in the island of Bahrain, and also the island of Failaka, located in Kuwait, or even the coastal territories of the northeast of the Arabian Peninsula, as the islet of Tarut. The name could correspond to a federation, real or fictitious, according to the times, of small ports of transit of the old times. Archaeological research in the northeastern Persian Gulf has found evidence of the flourishing of the Dilmun civilization, and its importance as a hub of international trade in this region. In Bahrain, the most important site is Qalaat al Bahrain, located in the north of the island. Its oldest levels date back to the middle of the third millennium. A large quantity of seals has been found, proof of the importance of trade in this island. About 4 km further west, three temples associated with the Dilmun culture were exhumed in the village of Barbar. On the island of Failaka, a material culture similar to that of Bahrain was found, with more Mesopotamian objects (cylinder seals, ceramics), which would indicate that this place served as a point of contact between Dilmun and Mesopotamia. In the levels of the first half of the first millennium of Failaka, a stele written by Nebuchadnezzar II, and a bowl dedicated by that same king to the local temple, prove a Babylonian hold on this place. Tarut Island, located further south, was also a transit port between these two regions. After the 6th century, all information about Dilmun is lost. With the passage of Nearchus at the head of the fleet of Alexander the Great, reappears the reference to the Persian Gulf, in historical sources. The Greeks do not stop in Bahrain, but in Failaka, where a colony is established. From the Hellenistic period until the beginning of the Muslim conquest, Dilmun reappears in the texts under the Greek name of Tylos. It would have been integrated for some time in the Seleucid empire, then probably in that of the Parthians. The Sassanid Persians seize it under the reign of Shapur II, and retain control until the Muslim conquest in the seventh century AD.

Compatible with Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm.
