TE - Kastaniani

Description
Map Name : Kastaniani
Game Mode : Territory
Size : Large

Description :
This map is based on a real life location, a village (my village) called Kastaniani (Pogoniou). Kastaniani is a small village at northern border of Greece in Epirus region. Kastaniani took part in World War II in Greek-Italian war. Although the village wasn't the last point of defense, it played an important role on holding back the Italians.
I did my best to make the map to be as accurate and realistic as possible, although due to the greek landscape (lots of folliage), lack of references (old photos) and lack of custom assets it's somewhat inaccurate.
The map is the village "entrance" and there's no actual village in the map.
The village only had one road to access so the whole map is played mostly on this one road.

Gameplay Notes :

- There are 4 points/objectives and all objectives have a high capture time. Despite being only 4 objectives the map may last long.

- There are no mortars, artillery or rockets.

- Defenders reinforcements are considerably a lot fewer than attackers.

- As mentioned in description, the map is based on a real life location so the map design is very specific and there wasn't much room for improvisation.

- Objectives and spawns are different than most maps and in combination with no artillery other than usual tactics may be required.

- It's important due to the design to have good Squad Leaders and Team Leader to provide smoke for cover. There are lots of open spaces and in many places there is hardly any cover.

- Unlike other maps, there isn't a lot of "actual" cover meaning buildings or structures. However the are tons of bushes to hide so use them to your advantage.

- The grass max view distance is increased so that even prone on grass it provides cover.

- If you happen to get trapped somewhere or get lost in the bushes, type "suicide" in console.

Other Notes :

- This map hasn't yet been tested on a full server.

- In old computers performance may be a bit bad. Try lowering your settings.

- Although the map is playable with bots, bots act weird in Red Orchestra 2 (as we all know) and they can also "see" through bushes.

- The surrounding landscape still needs work but due to the time I have available I will not be able to improve it any time soon. If I find the time in the future, I may continue the map further on and maybe even create the actual village and add more objectives.

- The map is a recreation of Greek landscape hence it's different than any other RO2 maps and it's like a combination between RO2 and RS.

- Although I have experience with various engines and level designing this map took considerably a big amount of time to create mostly because it was my first try to do anything with UDK but also because of my crappy computer and the many bugs and issues RO2 SDK has.

Known Issues :

- The church building seems to have broken lighting but RO2 SDK seems to have a bug and I don't know how to fix. If someone has more knowledge about .fbx importing in RO2 SDK let me know.

How to play it :

When you subscribe to the map it should show under the 'Steam Workshop' menu in the game. If it doesn't show in game you can use an external website to download the steam workshop item and the put the file in "\Documents\My Games\RedOrchestra2\ROGame\Published\CookedPC\Maps"

NOTE FOR SERVER OWNERS!!! :
Steam workshop seems to be broken so uploading the file from steam workshop won't work if you have a server and you want to upload it there.

Here's a link to download the file externally : Google Drive Link [drive.google.com]

Personal Notes :

This map was made as a tribute to my village as I always wanted to make something about it. The reason I chose RO2 to recreate it, is because I believe it's an amazing game despite not having any more support from the devs. Hopefully one day, I may be able to create a proper realistic shooter game to recreate Greek-Italian war since it's hardly known.
As for Kastaniani (and Epirus region in general) it's a beatiful place with incredible nature, people and tradition. For any of you that happen to come or plan to go to Greece, you should try traveling to Epirus region and see for yourself the beauty of nature and the tradition.

Hello friend! I am Turkish and I say you recreated Mediterranean landscape very well. Im from Thrace, your village really looks like my village too. My humble suggestion is, please add more rocks (for cover) and more edge-y terrain features. Good job! +1

@obama no it's just a map resembling how the place might look. It was my first map so it's not the best, but I may fix some things on it if I have time.

@joff I agree with what you say and that's the reason I still make maps for RO2. But thing is RO2 uses UDK which is super old and since I am a programmer and a game developer it's hard/annoying plus I don't have a lot of free time to be bothered creating something on a bigger scale. And also if you see all total conversion mods for RO2 and even RS2 aren't working.
As I said, I will put work at some point and gather a proper team to create maybe a different game from scratch.

@Mr who said RO2 is dying and so what. Games aren't a popularity contest so long they exist some proportion of the worlds gaming population will always be around to play games like RO2, young and old. Having said that if its not accurate those attracted to the subject matter like yours truly will show less interest it doesn't live up to your synopsis as described. If a jobs worth doing at all its worth doing well.

@joff Obviously I can't be bothered to create a full conversion mod to add two new factions especially considering RO2 is dying and tools are super obslete. However I do plan to create at some point a game that's similar to RO2 and features the greco-italian war.

Accuracy is lacking where are the Greeks or Italians only Russians and Germans in mine be more interesting if you actually had the two nations plus uniforms and arms and languages as appropriate for the campaign.
