The "Unchained Gorilla" had an eventful but unspectacular 2018 campaign that included an IWGP Intercontinental Championship shot at NJPW’s 46th Anniversary Show as well as a few swings at the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Titles. Makabe participated in his 15th consecutive G1 Climax and ended with a mildly-respectable six points.

One of the highlights of Makabe’s year had nothing to do with Togi himself but rather his Great Bash Heel teammate Tomoaki Honma who returned from a lengthy absence due to injury. Unfortunately, Honma’s ring rust led him to be ousted from the fall’s World Tag League and left Makabe searching for a replacement. While he found one in the young Toa Henare, the team was not successful in the tournament finishing with just eight points. A far cry from the back-to-back World Tag League crowns Makabe and Honma won in 2015 and 2016.
