Description
Era - 1980s - WWF/NWA

Charisma is an essential quality for a professional wrestler. Some have it, some just don't, no matter how hard they try. But for a select few, charisma is simply a way of life. And that was the story for the Junkyard Dog.

Sylvester Ritter was a standout athlete, an All-American football player who took to pro wrestling after injuries derailed a chance to play for the Green Bay Packers. He then decided to go into professional wrestling, bouncing around from Tennessee to Calgary's Stampede Wrestling, before settling down in NWA Mid-South Wrestling. Taking on the name of the Junkyard Dog, and coming to the ring with his trademark chain(foreshadowing the entrance of MMA fighter Rampage Jackson), the JYD became wildly popular, feuding with the Freebirds, Ted DiBiase and Butch Reed in memorable confrontations.

By 1984, JYD went to the World Wrestling Federation, and while he was still extremely popular, the Dog became more of a gatekeeper type, an obstacle for any heel looking to take their shot at Hulk Hogan.

Few wrestlers at this time were as well defined by their entrance themes as the Junkyard Dog, who took George Clinton's Atomic Dog and Queen's Another One Bites the Dust to great effect, and even sung his own theme, Grab Them Cakes with disco singer Vickie Sue Robinson, performing it on ♥♥♥♥ Clark's American Bandstand at one point.

I've never subscribed to an edit so fast; JYD was one of my favorites.
