Torino (Turin)

City-State Trait: If in Trade Route range of your Capital, the cities that you found or conquer are connected to it by a road.

City-State Type: Industrial

History:
The history of Turin begins in the 3rd century BC. AD when, along the banks of the Po, the first Celtic tribes settled, the Taurines in search of arable plains. In 218 BC BC, the small village, ally of Rome, is besieged and taken by the Carthaginian army of Hannibal with its famous elephants. All Cisalpine Gaul, including the city of Turins, is gradually subjected by Rome during the third and second centuries BC. J.-C. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city was conquered by the Lombards, then by the Franks of Charlemagne (773). It is then controlled by the Arduin dynasty of Ivrea from the middle of the tenth century until 1050. In 1419, the Savoie annexed the whole of Piedmont. The city took off in 1563, when it became the capital of the States of Savoy instead of Chambery. It becomes the capital of the kingdom of Sicily when this island is attributed to the Duke of Savoy by the treaty of Utrecht in 1713, then that of Sardinia in 1720 after exchange of islands and royal titles. In 1798, Turin was taken by the French, during the constitution of the Piedmontese Republic. On May 13, 1799, the city was occupied for two weeks by the Austro-Russian troops of the Russian general Alexander Suvorov. The latter, June 20, 1799, after a victory against the French Republic at the Battle of the Trebbia, restores the monarchy by restoring the King of Sardinia Charles Emmanuel IV of Savoy on his throne. But the city is taken over by the French, in 1800, after the Battle of Marengo. From 1802 to 1814, Turin became the capital of the department of Po. In the nineteenth century, after the French occupation under the Revolution and the First Empire, it soon became an imposing capital. Turin will launch the process of unification of Italy, thanks to Victor-Emmanuel and Camillo Cavour, political personality who gives the name of Risorgimento to this process of unification. With the active participation of Giuseppe Garibaldi and the military support of the Second French Empire, these three men will succeed in unifying Italy. Thus, in 1861, Turin is the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy, before losing this role in 1865 for the benefit of Florence, then Rome in 1870. In 1871, the Frejus tunnel is open, which turns Turin into a important communication node between Italy and France. The city has 250,000 inhabitants. Some of the most emblematic monuments of the city, such as the Egyptian Museum or the Mole Antonelliana, are built during this period.

Compatible with Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm.
