Cold Embrace

Description
Notes
  • A rarely used, unofficial special weapon is featured prominently here.
  • This level has been balanced and playtested for "revolver only" runs.

Hints & Tips
  • Successfully completing the level is mostly about routing: picking up the weaponry available in the right order.
  • The special weapon has a number unique properties that are helpful in completing the level: it instakills everything with a single shot, is completely silent, and gets rid of enemies in such a manner that they can't be resurrected by Liches - meaning that those corpses won't attract the Liches either.
  • Also, while not exactly a helpful property, of all the ranged weapons in the game, it has the slowest projectile travelling time meaning that you need to anticipate a bit when targeting moving enemies. However, notably these projectiles also travel through glass without the need to break those first.
  • Two of Madam Stela's phylacteries can be taken out by punches alone. For the one in the lowest elevation, you can drop on it from above. From there, you can jump onto the vent from the right of it, and get to the next bottle. Given no other enemies see you, this phylactery can be broken through melee without alerting the Lich that's standing besides it.
  • These are the only required melee "kills" in a "revolver only" run, so there is enough weaponry lying around as to not to be forced into bunch of boxing. Actually, I think it may very well be possible to complete the level without any melee at all since in these runs I don't recall picking up the .25 mousegun.
  • Getting the special weapon in the room to your left from the starting location right from the get-go seems almost mandatory - even when it requires using most, if not all of, your initial revolver ammunition.
  • Taking out the Bartender's phylactery on the bottom-left side of the map is recommended before tackling the corresponding bottom-right side.
  • Personally, I found Madam Stela to be one the last enemies I took out before finishing the objective. Given that she drops a combat shotgun, there might be routes unbeknownst to me that opt to go for her early.
  • There are a total of three special weapon pick ups in the level: the one at the beginning, second on the bottom-middle of the stage between the balconies (has a "do it" marking to indicate its location), and the third one on the bottom-right side of the map.
