City-State Trait: +100% Harbor district adjacency Gold bonus.

City-State Type: Trade

History:
Abaskun or Abasgun, was a port that existed during the Middle Ages on the southwestern side of the Caspian Sea, not far from Gorgan. In his Geography, Ptolemy mentions a Sokanda river in Hyrcania, which had to give its name to the city. The exact location of Abaskun remains uncertain; most likely being located not far from the mouth of the Gorgan River. According to Arab geographers, Abaskun was one or three days away from Gorgan. Its coordinates must be close to the village of Khaje-nafas or the city of Gomishan. Abaskun was a thriving trading place from which the wealthy merchants left for Daylam, Derbent, and Itil in Khazar lands on the trade route along the Volga. The productions of the city included sorrow, clothes, fish, and bird feathers, which were used for decorating purposes. In the 10th century, Abaskun owned a citadel made of baked bricks and a large mosque in the merchants' quarter. The prosperity of the city and its vulnerable location made it a target for Varean expeditions on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The Varangians made their first major attacks between 864 and 884, looted the city in 909 or 910, and again in 913. In 1220, Ala ad-Din Muhammad, the exiled leader of the Khwazm-Shahs, hid from the Mongols on an island not far from Abaskun. After that, the city is not mentioned in any document. During the fourteenth century, the Persian geographer Mostawfi wrote that Abaskun was an island that was submerged by the Caspian Sea, due to temporary changes in the Oxus, which briefly poured into the Caspian Sea rather than in the Aral Sea.

Compatible with Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm.
