GUPPY Submersible

Description
The GUPPY Submersible is a pocket submarine made for exploration, especially cave and wreck diving.
Different to most other submarines, it doesn't rely on flaps but uses propellers instead. This way it behaves more like a helicopter, turns on a dime and changes it's depth quickly without the need to move forward.

With the Large Battery being the most efficent battery in terms of capacity to size and weight ratio, the GUPPY is basically a diving Large Battery with a little bit of submarine built around it.

FEATURES:

  • 6 Propellers for moving (Up/Down, Forwards/Backwards, Yaw, Pitch)
  • Large Battery for maximum durability
  • 1 Small Pump to fill ballast, 4 Large Fluid Pumps (2 in a row, on each side) to drain ballast. Neutral bouyancy is achieved around 1530 litres. The pumps will stop working around a depth of 100 meters. You can go deeper, but you will have to rely on your motors to get back to the surface (I recommend neutral bouyancy and the use of vertical motors to get down).
  • Bilge Pump (ATTENTION: will pump the fluids in your cockpit into your ballast tanks! This way it can utilize the power of the 4 Large Fluid Pumps to get the fluids out against the water pressure of ocean and also quickly creates an air pocket for you to survive, if your ballast tanks aren't full)
  • Top Connector for getting lifted
  • Spotlights on top, front, bottom and sides for spatial awareness in caves and narrow spaces
  • Adjustable Search Lights. You can increase/decrease the angle between the 2 lights to enlight a wider area in front of you
  • Map System. It shows your rotation and postion, will radio connect to the GUPPY Exploration Ship (WIP) and show all connected vehicles.
  • Bottom Mag and Connector
  • Heater
  • Camera with infrared mode and monitor.
  • Diving Equipment right behind your seat

BE CAREFUL WHEN LEAVING THE SUBMERSIBLE UNDERWATER! It's a small submarine, this also means it's only a small space the water needs to fill to sink you into depths where your pumps won't help you anymore.
I recommend staying connected to a crane to lift you back up when going for a swim!

THE GUPPY AND SUBMARINE SUPPORT VESSELS

As you might notice, the GUPPY has a lot of functions designed to work with submarine supporting vessels. Something is approaching on the horizon. Stay tuned...
https://www.fraseryachts.com/uploads/image/yachts/alucia/Auroux_yacht_for_sale_Alucia_7306.jpg

  • Top Connectors: When the Top Connector connects to something, the second Top Connector will become active. This way, you can build a connector on a crane that mimics this behaviour and never have to worry about the rotation of the submersible
  • Data Connector: The second connector sends data to the connected vessel to operate a crane with.
  • Video and Radio: The GUPPY is sending your current position, yaw rotation, depth and front camera video. You can receive this data and build a mission control on your vessel. If you play solo or without a supporting vessel, you can turn off all radio transmissions to save battery life. The frequency is set by the "Identiy" value of the microcontroller on the bottom of the submersible.
  • Rails: 2 Sliding Connector Gripper will attach to Sliding Connector Tracks. You can lift the submersible onto a ship, connect it to a rail and slide it around. The GUPPY is actually lightweight enough to be pulled along a rail by your character. Don't forget the Rail Brakes!

KNOWN ISSUES:
If you can give me a hint how to fix them, please comment!

  • Low Bouyancy:
This results in a proplem with the hatch. It's pretty hard to get in without the submarine taking in water (even the weight of your character pushes it down). You can work around this by entering the submarine on a supporting vessel and use remote crane controls to get the GUPPY into the water. Or use a glitch: You can actually target the seat through the closed hatch!
I tried a lot to fix this. Increasing ballast tanks, Increasing size of cockpit and the air filled back compartment, reducing weight...basically i would have to remove the Large Battery *sigh*.
It never makes a big difference and often results in the vehicle getting out of balance.

  • unstable driving:
Especially when on the surface and with empty ballast tanks, the submarine likes to go all over the place. This behaviour would be quite easy to fix with a horizontal tail fin. But this would add drag to the tail when using the vertical motors, resulting in saltos instead of going up and down.

  • could use some kind of grabber arm:
The bottom mag and connector are merely a compromise solution. And it has been proven quite tideous to pick something up with it. Still working on a compact solution for this.

Have fun diving!

Okay, thanks, sad that they dont fix that stuff...

Sadly, the Stormworks Devs put out an update making propellers in water extremley sluggish. It takes them ages to get to speed and to stop again. I opened an Issue in the Issue Tracker a few years ago, but to no availl. All i can say: the faster you drive, the better you can steer, also countersteering to slow down the steering probs is also a good thing.

I really like it, but how do you steer it? When i press left or right it turns, but always like 90° or more, so you cant steer it very precisely. Is that intentional or skill issue from me?

@UR_MOM
Yes, you can use it, as long as you link the original GUPPY in the description! I'm actually quite thrilled to see my little submarine as a part of a larger creation! :=

@Lix I don't know how to direct message you, but I am hoping to get your permission to use this sub in conjunction with a ship I am working on. I'd like to publish it on the workshop. It uses the GUPPY directly.

This is a cool little Sub, i liked it so much that i decided to update it, the link is https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2258698643 , Hope this is ok with you Lix if not i will remove it :)
I have linked this one to my version and you get all the credit for the design :)

That sounds awesome I can't wait to see that.

Yeah, i actually did this mission when testing this sub. I ended up flooding his vehicle to turn on the connectors, wiggled myself with the bottom connector onto it and because i stayed connected to my ship's crane the whole time, i was able to pull them both out of the water. The dude barely survived in a little air bubble in his craft. Wasn't my finest rescue, wouldn't recommend... :D

But it got me thinking, maybe i can build a steerable diving bell with a connector hatch that simply can be put on the ship instead of the submarine. Well, this gets added to the to-do-list. "Develop special equipment for special missions".

There was a mission to rescue someone from a sub at the bottom of the ocean. The funny thing about this was trying to drag up the sub but could not attach to it (the connect's on the broken sub were not on lol). I then decided to open hatch to rescue but that ended badly too. I have been laughing the entire time trying to problem solve this then realized it had a special dock for the sub. But yeah the ship is far more important right now cause kept running out of batteries on the sub and dragging it behind another ship does not work well with rock. The build is awesome but understand my stupidity to operate it correctly can be a problem. And thank you for taking time to help out people who can not build properly.

Right now i'm building a ship that can carry and recharge this submarine. But maybe afterwards i can build a rescue submarine. What features would you like a a rescue submarine to have?
