Description
The war is here, and America needs a small, peppy off-roader to conquer the terrain on loose, sandy beaches, dense, foliage-covered forests, and populated, urban environments. Desperate for cash, Jon H. Wiley got to work deigning the now-iconic 4 wheeler, equipping it with a 134 cubic inch Flathead powerplant outputting a measly 55 horsepower through a 3-speed transmission. The army accepted, but they needed a few changes. Extra weight and flare was removed for simplicity, the engine's compression ratio was increased to 6.5:1, and the power was increased to a whopping 60. Still not much, but it would be able to push the 2500 pound vehicle over rocks and through bogs with a brand new low gear that you couldn't stall if you wanted to. The army was pleased, and used the new JP-2 (Affectionately referred to as the "Jeep" for short) extensively in most reconnaissance applications as well as on the battlefield itself. Replaced in later years with the MP-38, and succeeded in civilian application as the CP-2, the Wiley's original was an instant classic, and an American icon
