Wessex 592AD - Battle of Woden's Burg

Description
Wessex 592AD - The Battle of Woden's Burg
by Lightning_strike97

With the revolt of the Saxon king Ceawlin's nephew, Wessex has been plunged into civil war and England is in chaos. Lead your kingdom to glory and unite your culture, either cementing Saxon hegemony, or driving the invaders back into the North Sea.
Factions are as follows, and all civs should be set as follows:
Player 1 (Blue) - Kingdom of Dumnonia (Celts)
Player 2 (Red) - Ceawlin of Wessex (Goths)
Player 3 (Green) - Irish (Vikings)
Player 4 (Yellow) - Welsh (Celts)
Player 5 (Teal) - Kingdom of Mercia (Goths)
Player 6 (Purple) - Kingdom of East Anglia (Goths)
Player 7 (Grey) - Kingdom of Hwicce (Goths)
Player 8 (Orange) - Ceol of Wessex (Goths)

This map is mostly a (MULTIPLAYER ONLY) standard diplomacy map. All players are free to negotiate with whomever they like; even the two claimants to the throne of Wessex can make their peace - if they like. Forge alliances with other players. Scheme with them or backstab them. Any path is yours to take on the road to building a glorious kingdom to stand the test of time.

Play as the bloodthirsty King of a mighty Anglian or Saxon kingdoms, and raise your warriors and huscarls into a mighty host, or play as the general of a Romano British dominion, rallying your legionaries and striving to retain your independence in the wake of the Roman withdrawal, and seeking to once again unite Britannia. Alternatively, play as the Irish, and reave and pillage in search of gold, to your hearts' content!

Imperial Age and Mangonels are disabled. Population is restricted to 200, so don't overexpand your villager and trade economy. Victory conditions are different for each faction. To find your victory conditions, read the scouts page. The first player to fulfil all their victory conditions at the same time wins the game *immediately*. (Warning: this means there is no countdown, so be vigilant to see if someone is about to win!)

It's possible to go over the standard population limit by purchasing special spawns. However, there is an upper population limit of 215 (250 for P8). If you exceed 215 units, all your units will start taking damage until you rectify the situation, so take care not to exceed 215 population.

Oh, well thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.

No worries, sorry if I was a bit harsh in the correction! Burg and Beorg are similar words so I totally understand the choice and I could well be wrong on that point. And yes, there are a load of references to Burg so it'd be a pain to fix now.

Btw, really fun map! I had a great time with it; nice stuff! I'll keep an eye out for if you're working on any other maps.

It sounds like you are correct. I mistakenly went with 'burg' as I assumed it was the most common label since it has stuck to the Wikipedia article for so long. I'll keep that in mind in future, although I don't intend to go back and edit instances of 'burg' on this map. If I ever refine it, maybe I will. Thanks a lot for the correction.

I'll bear in mind (I have the same issue with my old maps, they always seem more flawed than when I made them). Still, I'm really excited by the screens you posted so I'm eager to give it a go! Looks like a nice map.

So translation: you're correct about Burg and Barrow, but not that they have similar meanings, and certainly not in the Old English. The place is "Wōdnesbeorġ". Burh translates to Burg, but the place is a "Beorg" not a "Burh". Burh is a fortified town (more or less - there's debate on this). The Bosworth-Toller dictionary lists Beorg as "a hill, mountain" or "a heap, barrow, place of burial".

If you have a look at Swanton or Whitelock's translations of the Chronicles they translate the entries for MS A and E both as the battle of "Woden's Barrow". It's only Wikipedia that calls it Woden's Burg, and I think that is incorrect.

I'm glad you're interested, however, I would mention that I now view this map as fairly flawed. Burg and barrow are both English words as I understand it, so if I'm not mistaken, both translations are correct.

This looks really interesting, so I'm keen to have a go. Just briefly though, isn't this the battle of Woden's Barrow? Just a quick question - why has Beorg been translated as Burg?

Ha! I'm glad to hear it. Thanks alot for your kind words. Yes it's possible that I featured settlements which were not particularly notable at the time. Hastings is certainly one, but I think it serves as a good place which most players can relate to, as most people have heard of the famous battle many centuries later. I am also from the north of England, you see, so in truth my knowledge of the towns of the south, particularly at other points in history, is not incredibly sharp. I do deeply enjoy the history though. In any case, those are some very relevant criticisms and I thank you for your comment.

So I’ve played as every faction several times-this is one map you can play 100x!. What a thoughtful representation. Very immersive and challenging. I changed out the Vikings for celts as P3 but otherwise it’s an interesting set of matchups. One critique I have, since you spent obvious time on the setting, is that certain places like Axebridge are featured, which I’ve never read of existing as a notable settlement then, and Hastings, which MAY have been a small port, while omitting what I think are more obvious choices like Caerleon, Chester, etc. that would make play more strategic. I’ve edited paths thru the welsh mountains so enemies don’t bottleneck at aberystwyth. I say that only bc I see you put so much work into this already so it’s all love buddy thanks for your work it’s cost me a lot of down-time!

The Celt and Viking civs are both underutilized by many on here and I like seeing content made with them. That's all I'm gonna say.
