The hotkey would allow more user discretion and has been done in other roguelikes like Dungeon crawl stone soup but that's more melee focused, i believe it would work in Qud too.
Perhaps the devs intentionally chose not to implement this to circumvent the grinding, but safe manual exploration becomes tedious like this.
I think a hotkey for melee attacking the closest enemy would solve this problem without changing much else, the enemies remain hostile and you can kill em instantly by just spamming the hotkey. This nets you the loot and xp you would normally get (however small) while minimizing the tedium from attacking each qdzu meticulously and start-stop gameplay.
