When the FWA insurgence threatened cargo shipments from and towards the Frontier region, a series of quick responses were drawn up to protect the vulnerable ships from ambushes. One of these was the construction of a large amount of small, jump-capable warships that could be deployed rapidly in response to a developing situation.

The Type 8 Jump Corvette built on the successful Liftmaster-class of freighters, however, the hull was modified to increase survivability in a head-on attack and facilitate the mounting of weapons and docking hardpoints for snub fighters.

In combat, the snub fighters would engage first to disable enemy weapon hardpoints and engines, whereupon the Corvette would engage to finish off the disarmed foe with a rocket barrage. However, in practice, the manpower required to field the snub fighters, along with the high expected casualty rate, meant that ships were regularily deployed with few or no snub fighters at all.

Against light attackers, the ship proved suitable as a response, however anything with even a modicum of military-grade armour would be able to outlast the badly protected Corvette. Nonetheless, the simple fact that "any gun was still better than no gun" saw the ship deployed in number with rapid reaction forces across the Frontier stations.
