Newcastle, Australia (1:1 scale)

Description
Welcome to the coastal city of Newcastle[www.visitnewcastle.com.au]

Located two hours north of Sydney, Newcastle is the second most populous city in the state of New South Wales, and the seventh most populous city in Australia. It is also the name of a metropolitan region encompassing several different cities, each with numerous suburbs, which serves as the main city of the Hunter Valley. This map focuses on the City of Newcastle itself.

Situated on Australia’s eastern coastline, the city houses some spectacular beaches, including the lengthy Stockton Beach—a favourite track for 4-wheel driving. It shares its large harbour with the City of Port Stephens, including Fullerton Cove.

⚠️ NOTE: This map doesn't require any mods, but it works nicely with 25 or 81 tiles.

🚜 Industry

Newcastle has a rich industrial past, with much of the city being undermined. Today, it runs the largest coal export in the world, outputting 160 million tons in 2017. Appropriately, the map is filled with ore resources.

The city naturally has large forests, thanks to the large state preservation areas. I’ve also added some oil and farmland within the city limits, so you should have no problem getting a large industry going.

🚗 Highways

This map contains several highway connections, each painstakingly recreated to match their real life counterparts.

■ The Newcastle Inner City Bypass is a stretch of motorway connecting the city’s north and south ends. It has been constructed in stages since the 1980s, with one stage still yet to be completed. This map includes the final stage as outlined in NSW Government documents, linking Rankin Park and the John Hunter Hospital with the new Jesmond interchange, at the site of the (former) Jesmond roundabout.

■ The Newcastle Link Road is a road that connects the western suburbs with the Pacific Motorway (to Sydney) and Hunter Expressway (to Singleton). In real life, it terminates in a non-highway road. I have moved it slightly, running it through a corridor of mostly empty land in Elermore Vale, so it can connect directly to the Inner City Bypass.

■ The Pacific Highway is an old, 790 kilometre stretch of road connecting Sydney to Brisbane. It has seen significant development along the urban corridor in Newcastle, preventing the road from being upgraded to dual carriage motorway standards. In this map, it forms a critical link between the city and the outer motorway network, so it has been upgraded to a dual carriage motorway.

■ Finally we have Nelson Bay Road/Cormorant Road, which runs from Kooragang Island––across Stockton Bridge––to Nelson Bay. It is a single carriage highway with no urban development, but it has yet to be upgraded due to funding. I have turned it into a dual carriage motorway, and bypassed the Kooragang Island intersection to improve traffic flow.

🚆 Railways

Not content with implementing future motorway networks, I’ve also dug into the past for the rail network. Again, each is recreated as precisely as possible.

■ The Central Coast/Newcastle Line is a rail line that connects Sydney to Newcastle, via the Central Coast.

■ The Hunter Line connects Newcastle to Maitland, Dungog, and Scone.

■ The Belmont Line makes a return! Splitting from the Central Coast/Newcastle Line at Adamstown station, this old train line ran from Newcastle to the eastern Lake Macquarie suburb of Belmont. It has been closed since 1991, and converted into a walking trail, but today it has been resurrected.

That's all folks! This is my first map, so please be sure to give the map a rating, and leave any feedback you might have for me in the comments section. Thanks!

P.S. Wondering about the shipwreck? That's the Pasha Bulker, which found itself stuck on Nobby's Beach following the cyclone system that hit Newcastle in June 2007.

i think the only possible problem with this is that you aren't able to place in Fort Scratchley. Other then that minor detail this is completely accurate. Love the map.

Really great map! I've been wanting to make Central and North Coast maps, particularly around Gosford and Port Macquarie, but it's hard to pick a particular spot and stick to 1:1 :)
