When the Manhunters had massacred Sector 666, only five beings remained alive: the Four Demons Qull, Roixaeume, Orphram, and Dal-Xauix, and the Ryutan Atros. Vowing revenge on the Guardians they became the Five Inversions, waging war against the Guardians' servants for millennia with blood magic at their command, establishing an Empire of Tears binding a multitude of worlds together through eldritch enchantments. Atros became Roixaeume's lover and apprentice in blood divination, and eventually saw in a prophecy that he would one day kill his four companions. And so it came to pass, after many long years of what was to be eternal imprisonment on the hell-world of Ysmault, that Atros fulfilled the prophecy, using their blood to harness the power of the red light of rage and becoming Atrocitus, the first Red Lantern.
