TLDR: You get points for filling up columns, and lose points for making matches.

Instead of making matches, avoid them, and try to max out the grid. Whenever you fill a column you get a base 1000 points and bonuses. Not maxing the same column multiple times in a row gives you an additive 50% bonus for each time you maxed out a different column, so spread out to accumulate a large chain bonus. Maxing out a column within 2 seconds of a previous one gives you triple points for the next one, on top of the previous bonus. Maxing all three colums together to completely fill the grid gives you a 20000 point bonus. There is no penalty for overfilling, however it will clear the grid. Be careful to avoid matches though, as full columns that have matches that havn't disappeared yet do not count for points, and matches subtract points from your score. You'll lose 5^match_size points for each match, so 3 block matches won't hurt too much, taking away 215 points, but larger matches can take a large chunk out of your score, like a 6 size match taking away 15625 points, or even completely destroy you, like an 8 match taking 390625 points, or a 9 match taking 1953125.
