L'acier valyrien est un acier forgé selon un processus en partie magique comprenant des incantations, qui confère une légèreté et un tranchant sans égal aux lames ainsi conçues. Il est originaire de l'antique Valyria et les secrets de sa fabrication ont disparu avec le Fléau, même si les forgerons de Qohor en maîtrisent encore le travail. Dans la chaîne des mestres de Villevieille, le maillon d'acier valyrien symbolise l'étude de la magie.
