History:
The city was founded by a Norwegian mercenary in 1635 60 miles north of Metropolis, before passing under the authority of the British. Owned by the Dutch West India Company, New Netherland was to pass in 1664 (and finally in 1674) under the British flag. During the American War of Independence, Gotham City is the site of a decisive battle and the rumor runs that it is home to various esoteric sects. Gotham City is in the 19th century a rich and teeming metropolis. Alan Wayne (ancestor of Bruce Wayne), Theodore Cobblepot (ancestor of Oswald Cobblepot) and Edward Elliot (ancestor of Thomas Elliot), are considered as the founding fathers of Gotham. In 1881, they built three bridges called the Gotham Gates, each bearing one of the family names. During the American Civil War, it was defended by an ancestor of the Penguin fighting for the Union Army, Colonel Nathan Cobblepot, in the legendary Battle of Gotham Heights. The nineteenth-century Gotham was ruled by five rival gangs, until the first "masks" appeared, eventually forming their own gang. It is unclear whether they were vigilantes or costumed criminals. In contemporary times, Batman is considered the protector of Gotham, as he fiercely protects his hometown. A series of dysfunctional personalities regularly plunge the city into a form of decay. That's when Bruce Wayne, Batman's alter ego and owner of the influential conglomerate, Wayne Enterprises, intervenes to stop the threatening activity of these dangerous criminals for the citizens of Gotham.
