Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida has proven the ability for traditional martial artists to adapt to the modern mixed martial arts scene, blending his family's Shotokan Karate with Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and Sumo techniques, and winning the UFC Light Heavyweight title.

Machida was recruited by the legendary pro wrestler, Antonio Inoki early in his career, fought in K-1 and joined the UFC in 2007. Machida's style was confounding to his opponents, shooting in and out from unpredictable angles, thwarting the takedown and using unorthodox sweeps and trips in response. Machida won the title at UFC 98 in 2009, defeating Rashad Evans and proclaiming after the fight that "The Dragon has become...the champion!"

Machida would eventually lose his belt in the second of two fights against fellow Brazilian Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, lost a split decision to Rampage Jackson, retired Randy Couture with a spectacular crane kick knockout and lost to Jon Jones by a brutal standing guillotine.

By 2018, Machida joined Bellator MMA, defeating Chael Sonnen in the following year and is looking to add the Bellator Middleweight title to his honors at this late phase in his career.
