History:
Kitigaaryuit is known as the site of the largest seasonal gathering of Inuit in the Canadian Arctic. It has been reported that up to 1000 people gathered there in the summer for a highly coordinated beluga hunt. Many of these hunters and their families were spending the whaling season at Kitigaaryuk Village. Up to 200 hunters in their kayaks worked together to bring the whales to shallow waters, where they could be killed more easily. The quality of the Kitigaaryungmiut's work is seen in the unique shape of their kayaks, which made them very light for their size. The Kitigaaryungmiut also met at Kitigaaryuk during the dark days of winter as they participated in games and festivities, and discussed government issues. Through archeology, we know that these people lived in the area at least 500 years ago. They lived in multi-family, semi-subterranean homes made of driftwood and insulated with turf. They also built gadjgit or larger buildings, where men would meet to do such things as work on equipment, share stories, and perform the rituals necessary to ensure a good hunt. The women did not spend much time in the qadjgit except to bring food to the men and participate in drum dances. The importance of Kitigaaryuit for Kitigaaryungmiut is also reflected in the fact that the place contains the largest concentration of Inuit tombs in the entire Canadian Arctic. The remains of a few hundred traditional tombs made of driftwood can be found in large cemeteries. A series of epidemics have claimed many lives among Kitigaaryungmiut when foreigners, such as merchants and whalers, arrived in the area. A devastating measles epidemic killed many people there around the turn of the century. The place was abandoned for a number of years because of the sadness and fear surrounding it. After Kitigaaryuit ceased to be a major gathering place, the place was used on a seasonal basis by a smaller number of Inuvialuit. An Anglican mission was established in the village of Kitigaaryuk and remained active from 1911 to about 1917. A Hudson's Bay Company post was also built and operated from 1912 until it closed in 1933. At Over the years, a number of people have lived on the site of the old village, and hunters still use it on a seasonal basis. In the early 1950s, a reindeer corral and enclosures were built on the mainland opposite the village. The old village of "Kittigazuit" (Kitigaaryuk) was declared a National Historic Site in 1978 because it is an archaeological site of national importance. An expansion of the historic site is currently being requested to reflect its importance as a cultural landscape.
