History:
Tiwanaku is an ancient archaeological city, capital of the state of Tiahuanacota, located 15 kilometers southeast of Lake Titicaca, in the La Paz department of western Bolivia. Tiwanaku was the center of the Tiwanaku civilization, a pre-Incan culture that founded its economy on agriculture, livestock and architecture, and encompassed the territories of the Collao Plateau, between western Bolivia, the south-west from Peru, northern Argentina and northern Chile, regions from which it has radiated its technological and religious influence to other contemporary civilizations. The city of Tiwanaku is characterized by its architecture decorated with reliefs and incised planes placed on steles; It is composed of seven important architectural constructions: Kalasasaya, semi-subterranean temple, Akapana pyramid, Puerta del Sol and Puma Punku, also great pyramids and sculptures. Material testimony of an important pre-Inca culture, the Tiwanaku culture had a port on Lake Titicaca, although it is 15 km from it. The magnificence of its culture is expressed in its excellent work in ceramics, with the famous queros (ceremonial vases), huaco-portraits (portrait in relief of a human face in a vessel), as well as in textiles and in particular in architectural constructions, many of which involve astronomical guidance. According to some authors, this culture developed from 1500 BC and collapsed around 900 or 1000 AD. C. Given its apparent antiquity, some scholars have suggested that Tiwanaku was the parent culture of American civilizations, while others regarded it as the capital of an ancient megalithic empire or a great empire that stretched Central Andes.
