Recopolis

City-State Trait: Receive a large amount of Gold the first time you declare war with a major Civilization.

City-State Type: Industrial

History:
Recopolis, which was in the Iberian Peninsula one of the three or four new cities created by the Visigoths (with Vitoria, Olite and perhaps Toro), was founded in 578 by King Leovigild (568-586), who would unite in part of the peninsula under his authority while bringing the Visigoth kingdom to its peak. Leovigild had this city called Recaredopolis ("Town of Recarede" in Greek) built in honor of his second son Recarede, who was not supposed to succeed him on that date. According to Roger Collins, the name of the city comes from Rexopolis, formed from the Latin rex ("king") and the suffix of Greek origin -polis ("city, city"), and would mean in this case "City of the King" . However, the Arab historian Ibn al-Athir makes it clear in his Annals of the Maghreb and Spain that Leovigild (Lewild) "built, near Toledo, the town of Recopolis (Rak'awbal), which he called the name of his son Rekarid, "and" fortify and enlarge the gardens. " The archaeological park of Recopolis includes in particular the fortified wall of the city, of which are preserved several parts in stones of approximately 2 m thickness, and the ruins of a church with the plan in cross, a palace- basilica, and an aqueduct. The palace of Recopolis was 130 m long and 14 m wide. Several Visigothic coins were struck in Recopolis. In the early eighth century, Recopolis will be renamed Madinat Raqquba (or Madina Raqaubal) by the Arab conquerors. The city will be abandoned during the ninth century and rediscovered by archaeologists in the twentieth century.

Compatible with Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm.
