Wyrd the Cursed

Description
INTRODUCTION

Wyrd is an attempt to create a balanced monster character that follows a similar trend to Webber, Wortox, and Wurt in that he is related to a monster in the game. In this case, Wyrd is related to both the Hounds and Vargs, so he's a bit like a werewolf. Wyrd was designed just for the world of Don't Starve. I wanted to create a new character that felt official, and didn't feel like a personal OC. He's for everyone to enjoy and hopefully, identify with.

People have been just absolutely raving about Wyrd since he's come out. When given the chance to leave some comments, here's what the people had to say about him!

"It's...beautiful" - Chazzed
"ITS THE FURRY MOD THAT IS GOOD" - dokebi
"Good boy! Ten out of ten! - BulBasH the Wizard
"OwO" - Auron
"cursed? he looks like a good boy to me" - The Guide From Terraria
"This is gay, we already have Wortox." -Isaac Hipkiss

ATTRIBUTES

Health: 200
Hunger: 150
Sanity: 150

Hunger Rate: 1.15x
Damage: 1.25x

PERKS
  • Wyrd listens to the woes of others nearby, raising their sanity while near him.
  • Wyrd is more resistant to the cold due to his thick fur.
  • Native hounds do not attack Wyrd, he may also feed them monster meat to recruit them as allies!
  • Wyrd is more comfortable working at night. Once the sun goes down his sanity slowly regenerates.
  • Wyrd's lupine eyes let him see in the night!
  • Wyrd can eat monster meat and not get all sick and gross feeling.

FLAWS
  • Wyrd has always had image issues, being a giant wolf man isn't helping him much. During the day time, his sanity starts to drain away while he dwells on just what he is, and what others think of him.
  • Other denizens of the Constant sure know what Wyrd looks like! He's a monster! Pigmen and Bunny Men will attack him on sight!
  • Wyrd overheats faster due to his thick fur.
  • Wyrd also struggles getting dry once he's gotten wet. Hopefully his friends don't mind wet dog smell.

THE CURSED FLASK

Wyrd awakes with the empty cursed flask in his inventory. In this state it's useless to him, but once Wyrd manages to make an Alchemy Engine, a world of possibilities open up to him. With the proper ingredients, Wyrd can mix drinks and pour them into his flask. Once finished, the flask will begin to smoke. The effects of the drinks Wyrd makes will effect him and anyone around him for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the flask will run dry, and a new drink can be made to fill it.

DRINK MIXING

Get close to an Alchemy Engine and Wyrd can start mixing up drinks, provided he has the right ingredients. The drinks and their effects are listed below.

  • Chill Rickey: Cools down Wyrd and those around him. Perfect for summer.
  • The Last Word: Boosts damage dealt for those around him. Great for big fights.
  • Corpse Reviver: A slow heal-over-time effect.
  • Dragon's Fire: Like inhaling pure fire. It'll heat you right up.
  • The Hangry Panky: A filling mist that should help stave off starvation.
  • Lighthouse Glow: It'll light stuff right up for Wyrd and those around him.
  • The Night After: A cursed stench that will drain away sanity.
  • Bees Knees: A cocktail that will make Wyrd and his allies move faster.

LORE

Wyrdell Baxton was your typical early 20's nobody trying to make ends meet. This scrawny beanpole of a man worked from dusk to the creeping of the sun in The Old Town Bar, located firmly in the heart of New York City. It was here that he spent his nights, slinging drinks and listening to the woes every brined blotto could tell him. He had a knack for trying to ease a stressed mind. So no matter the state they entered in, the patrons that left when he was working that night at least felt better, provided they could remember it in the morning.

His life was simple, yet stable. That was until the night when he served a mysterious woman in a purple velvet dress. She looked dressed for a dance, but there she was, ordering the cheapest of beers. Wyrdell offered to hear her woes and plights, but she claimed she had none, only offering to hear his instead. It was enough to get the young man to cough up some of his own drama. How he felt weak, pathetic, and how that simple town life seemed like a dead end instead of a road leading to greater things.

When the time came for her to part, she offered him payment and something more. A whisky flask made entirely of a smooth blackened metal trimmed with silver. She urged Wyrdell that if he ever felt he had no way out from his fate, to drink from that flask. With those words uttered, she left the bar, never to be seen again.

Wyrdell barely remembered he had the flask on him when the portal opened some weeks later. But it stood there, glowing ominously in a back alley on his way to work. It taunted him. That glow, that chance for something more, the sheer insanity of it all. But like all good starts to a story, he swallowed fear and stepped through, awaking somewhere entirely different. Somewhere all too terrible.

Before he could come to his senses, the darkness was upon him. The sound of growling surrounded him, and a sea of eyes loomed in those shadows. He reached into his pockets, fumbling for anything that could save him, though he knew he had nothing. His fingers traced the flask, and in a moment most morbid, he drank its contents. It was his way of saying goodbye to his life, one he knew would end in moments.

In his state of fear and quaking he didn't notice the change. He wouldn't understand until he looked over himself, when the hounds that had surrounded him merely paid him no mind and marched on their way. When he finally found a pond to look into, he saw the face of a monstrous beast looming back at him. No longer frail, but powerful, but far from human. He was afraid, yet excited. There was a new place to explore, his dead end was now an open road, and he was now strong enough to walk that path alone, or with friends.

CHARACTER TRIVIA
  • Wyrd has read many of The Wizard of Oz books. When he spots a headless statue he will reference Princess Langwidere. This was a character that cut off the heads of beautiful women to keep in her collection so she could have all the beautiful heads she ever wanted.
  • Wyrd spent a lot of time with his aunt Paige, who had a small farm. He spent a good time gardening, and has learned enough about crops to be able to spot blight.
  • He has called pumpkins 'pampcorns' ever since he was a kid, and nobody has really ever corrected him on it.
  • As a bartender, he knows a lot about what can be used to make various alcohols. He also references the old bar he used to work at from time to time in various examinations.
  • The bar Wyrd worked at is an actual real bar that existed in the early 1900's and is still standing to this day!
  • Wyrd's favorite comfort food is mushroom pizza.
  • He was taught the value of keeping spiders around from his time working on his aunt's farm. Due to this, Wyrd naturally likes spiders. He would probably get along with Webber rather well.
  • Wyrd's Aunt showed him the importance of being patient at a young age, he will often make references to this when he needs to wait for something.
  • Wyrd really, really, really sucks at chess.

Don't usually comment on these, but PLEASE someone do some bug fixes and QOL for Wyrd. Genuinely one of my favorite modded characters ever and would love to see him in the constant again.

Probably one of my favorite mod characters to play, would love to see a general heath check for this guy.

Also, for reference, I kinda thought this was one of those one and done cases, you know? Had no idea there was still THIS MUCH support for DST, which is kinda heartwarming. Great community!

I'm totally fine with folks wanting to make expansions or updates to the mod. If you get in contact with me via discord i'll make it an official update. I don't have access to the old game files, or the time to really get in and do a lot of changes personally. It's not like i 'abandoned' anything arbitrarily.

Does he have a favorite food? I know it says he likes mushroom pizza but that's not in the game. Love the mod btw

I would love to try out this character with my friends, but they're really picky about trying out workshop stuff. Do you know if you plan to address some of the bugs that some of the latest comment are reporting? I love this character and want to offer kudos to your work regardless on whether you still plan to support it or not. Thank you!
