Novgorod

City-State Trait: City Centers gain +2 Gold for each adjacent Snow tile.

City-State Type: Trade

History:
The oldest Russian city, it is mentioned in the chronicles from the year 859. Its denomination in Varangian Holmgard is thus attested in Nordic sagas at a very remote time. It was there that Riourik, considered the first monarch of Russia, founded his principality. Archaeological data suggest that the Gorodichtche, the residence of the kniaz (prince), dates from the first half of the 9th century, while the city itself is gradually being built from the end of the 9th century, taking the name of Novgorod, "the new city". In the middle of the 10th century, Novgorod became a prosperous medieval city located on the trade route of the Varangians to the Greeks between the Baltic Sea and the Byzantine Empire. In 882, Riurik's heir, Oleg the Wise, transferred his capital to Kiev, the capital of Kievan Rus. Novgorod regains its autonomy after the bag of it in the twelfth century. In fact, in 1136, it became an autonomous republic, the Novgorod republic, governed by the assembly of citizens, the vetche. In the thirteenth century, the city is a member of the Hanseatic League. At that time, Novgorod is threatened by the advance of many peoples from the west. One of the most famous attacks is that of the Teutonic Knights repulsed by Prince Alexander Nevsky during the Battle of Peipsi Lake in 1242. Trade during the fourteenth century contributes to the prosperity of the Hanseatic city. In 1478, it is annexed to the government of Muscovy by Ivan III, Prince of Moscow. It then sinks into a growing decline due not only to its dependence on the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal for its supply of grain, but also massacres of thousands of citizens perpetrated by the troops of Ivan the Terrible in 1570 (but also because of the decline of the Hanseatic League). During the Second World War, the city succumbs to the assaults of the German army on August 15, 1941. Its buildings are then systematically destroyed. The Red Army liberates the city on January 19, 1944. After the war, the city was gradually restored. Its main monuments have been classified as UNESCO World Heritage.

Compatible with Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm.

Novgorod city in the russian city list is replaced by Novosibirsk.
