In any case, if you feel like that for the screen, use a HUD that does't block out the screen. If it's done right though, you can work without needing that part of the screen.
As for enemies... bosses are great but good enemies/formations can help both before and during boss fights.
Since there's a limit to the post, a few things:
Don't let the player move below the HUD.
The audio is beyond horrible. Tone down the SFX volume and don't go shooting when there's nothing to shoot. I turned off the speakers when I watched.
Graphics are basic but they work for now.
