Description

A lightweight, no-frills fighter.
⨴ Despite appearances, the engine is pretty reliable (providing you don't hit any lag spikes while taking off).

Though other craft are credited with actually pushing Tolbrynd out of Valfross, the Adiantum is regarded as the reason Valfross survived at all.

It was designed during the lowest point in the Polar War, in response to a quickly dwindling material supply and rapidly worsening conditions. By the time production began in earnest, the only materials available were scrap, spare parts, and captured equipment. And yet, even built sloppily with these materials, it was fast to build, resistant to component failures, and capable of outflying even next-generation Tolbrynd fighters. It was often described as miraculous.

At one point, one Adiantum was deployed at dawn, performed air superiority duties until it was shot down in the late morning, was towed back to the factory in pieces and rebuilt, was redeployed in the late afternoon, and performed close air support until well after dusk.

Even long after the situation had improved enough for more capable craft to be deployed and produced, Adiantums continued to roll off the line for months. If nothing else, they were favoured for their resilience and fast build times - qualities which ensured it saw many a distant battlefield, even well after the war's end.

Built for RLM Contest #14: Light Wooden Fighters.
Wood blocks, grabbers, and steering hinges only.

The Block 2 design adds a single log spine, twin 8x autocannons, and replaces the control surface actuators with steering hinges (from cog toring). It still conforms to the contest rules.

I tried to do a contra-rotating engine design, but it had torque issues. So, only one side of the engine is powered.

This may very well be the best-performing fighter I've ever built.

Originally, the Block 1 was going to have a high-power cannon, but the mounting never really worked reliably, and was heavy; given that the contest didn't score weaponry, I ditched it. The Block 2 has it because of improvements to the structure (and a more reliable mounting point).

The name comes from a certain famous Touhou doujin song.
