Description
This is the second update on my DXC 5270 reskin. For some reason, 5270 is the default number for all the default DX, DSJ, NR and F7A/F7B liveries. This reskin is an attempt to replicate the real DXC 5270 as she looks today. The only major change with this 2nd update is the use of what is now my standard KiwiRail colour set. Or - palette - as some might call it.

DXC 5270 was built by General Electric at their plant in Erie, Pennsylvania. The engine was built in 1975, and arrived in New Zealand in February 1976. She was 1 of a class of 49 (now just 48) DX's built for the NZR, and was originally numbered as 2625. Like all the other DX's, 2625 entered service while painted in a distinctive bright yellow and orange or 'Clockwork Orange' livery. DX 2625 was renumbered as 5270 in late 1978, as part of the new Traffic Monitoring System or TMS, which is still used today. 1985 saw the locomotive loosing her Clockwork Orange livery in favour of International Orange, known to NZ railfans as Fruit Salad.

DX 5270 was reclassified as a DXB in 2005, the same year in which she received the hideous Toll Rail colours. Back in 2002, she had been fitted with the distinctive 'chutes' or air intakes now exclusive to the DXC subclass. This equipment is necessary on the line from Christchurch to Greymouth (the Midland Line), and that's to help with preventing suffocation of the crew in the 8.5 kilometre long Otira Tunnel.

In 2011, DXC 5270 was repainted in the standard KiwiRail livery. This locomotive is still in service today.
