Description
This reskin depicts DSJ 4045 as she looks today. She is one of three DSJ's in the KiwiRail livery.

The DSJ is a class of shunting locomotive used in both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. They have always been interesting to me, mainly because only five of them were ever built (4004. 4017, 4032, 4045 and 4060). They were designed and built by Toshiba in 1984, although DSJ 4004 was assembled in Japan. The remaining four were assembled at the former Addington Workshops in Christchurch. The DSJ is very similar to the DSG class, except for the following points:

1) The DSG has two engines. The DSJ only has one. The two classes have the same engine (Cummins KTA 1150-L), with the DSG having a power output of around 900 horsepower. As such, the DSJ is only half as powerful as the DSG.

2) There were twenty-four DSG's built, compared to only five DSJ's.

3) The DSG's cab is in the centre of the locomotive, while the DSJ's is slighty off-centre. This is quite noticable, even from a distance.

4) What's not so noticable is that the DSJ is a little bit shorter than the DSG. The DSJ is also slightly lighter, in terms of weight.

5) As the DSJ only has one end, one of the bonnets is shorter than the other. The bonnet which houses the engine has a big radiator grille on the front, while the other end of the locomotive doesn't have a grille. Both ends of the DSG have a grille, as both bonnets contain an engine.

Three DSJ's have been repainted in the KiwiRail livery. These are 4004, 4017 and 4045. The remaining two - 4032 and 4060 - are still in Toll Rail colours, having received said livery in the mid-2000s. These two DSJ's are two of only six locomotives that still wear the Toll Rail livery. The others are DSC's 2462 and 2720 as well as DH 2839 and TR 845. The last mainline locomotive to wear this livery was DXC 5356, which was repainted in KiwiRail colours only around two years before uploading this reskin.

At the time of uploading this reskin, I have been forunate enough to see and photograph three members of the DSJ class. These were 4032, 4045 and 4060. I believe 4004 and 4017 are based in the South Island (more specifically the town of Picton), while the other three are in the North, which is where I happen to live. I saw DSJ 4045 at the Fonterra dairy factory at Whareroa back in October 2016, and again at Palmerston North locomotive depot in January 2017, and a third time at Whareroa again in December 2018. I believe 4045 is normally based at Whareroa. As for 4032 and 4060, they are both based at Te Rapa yards in Hamilton. These two normally shunt wagons around the yard, but they have occasionally ventured out to Waitoa and Te Awamutu.

The original version of this re-skin has appeared in two of Frantic's videos.
