Disclaimer:
According to Weaponcore's classification system, the Hipper is a Destroyer.
However, I disagree!
Said classification system seems to be based on the total block count of the ship, which (understandably) doesn't take subgrids into account. (I personally think that the block amounts are kinda ridiculous as well, but that's not the point here)
I personally based Hipper's classification on her main guns, as in the past, warships were classified based on the caliber of their main guns. (For example, the USS Pensacola CA-24 was classified as a heavy cruiser because of her 203mm main armament, while her armour was worse than that of some destroyers at the time)
My classification is based on the calibers of the guns in the MWI weapon collection (unless given a specific role, such as carrier) and goes as following:

  • Battleships and anything larger make use of X-3 Heavy Cannons and Magnetic Coil Cannons as their main armament
  • Heavy Cruisers use MK3 Battlecannons and occasionally the Magnetic Coil Cannon
  • Light Cruisers use the MK2 Battlecannons as their main armament
  • Destroyers and larger auxiliary ships make use of the MK1 Battlecannon
  • Anything of a smaller class than destroyers make use of the Heavy Defense Turret

Lore:

The Admiral Hipper is the result of modernization within the PHI (Pravda Heavy Industries) assortment and navy.
After reclassifying the outdated Graf-Class battlecruisers (also referred to as a pocket battleships by its designers) to heavy cruisers as a result of a new classification system, it was determined that the role the class filled within the navy did not fit with its classification.
This led to the realization that there were no ship that could effectively fill the role of heavy cruiser, and as such, a new ship class was designed. The result of this is the Admiral Hipper-Class of heavy cruisers.

The Admiral Hipper-Class learns from the mistakes found in the Graf-Class, such as easily damaged subgrids that were not only difficult to produce, but were at times also crucial to the ship's performance, while also learning from the class' strengths.
Centralised in the hull lies a single line of cargo containers reinforced with heavy armour and welders, reaching from the bow to the stern.
Other important parts of the ship are also reinforced with welders, such as the main batteries, the main reactor, large thrusters, the main refinery and the shield controller.
Also hidden within the hull lie the bridge and CIC, with the bridge being connected to a secondary bridge sticking out of the hull.
Last on the list of defensive measures, the Admiral Hipper makes use of decoys and defense shields.
The main batteries are all placed on the deck of the ship in the same way as those on classic warships, but this only becomes a problem when the ship is being engaged from all directions, as she can quickly roll around the x-axis to get them back on target.
Complementing the main batteries are quadruple torpedo launchers located in the mouth, as well as an extensive array of anti air armaments and multipurpose missile launchers.
In addition to the shipborne weapons, she can also carry up to three fighters with her and has the capabilities to produce more, although not via a printer.
As such, these ships can serve as auxiliary carriers when deployed as carrier escorts.

The Admiral Hipper specialises in ship-to-ship combat and anti air fire, and is completely self-sufficient.
Her purpose in a fleet is to draw fire from opponents, so that less resilient ships can stay operational.
When operating on her own, she makes for an effective commerce raider, using her fighters to spot any oppertune targets.

@matt6841 - I wanted to add something like it, but it didn't really work out during testing. I might take another look at it in the future though.
