Four EuroFighter aircraft from the Italian Air Force took off yesterday from the Grosseto military airport to the airport of Keflavik, in Iceland, to launch the NATO Interim Air Policing operation, called "Northern Stork". The aim of the operation is to preserve the integrity of NATO's airspace by strengthening Iceland's skies surveillance, which does not have the capability and autonomous air defense structures. Italy contributes, with periodic shifts with the other countries of the Alliance, to this NATO mission.The task of the Italian assets will be to guarantee the surveillance service of the Icelandic airspace until the beginning of October, while at the same time carrying out joint training with the local Coast Guard personnel."The redeployment in Iceland is a mission, operational and training at the same time, which embodies the spirit of solidarity among the members of the Atlantic Alliance and also allows the maintenance and testing of standardized NATO security procedures", stated the General Claudio Graziano, Head of the General Staff of Defense, adding that "this joint air defense in the Icelandic sector is a clear example of rational management and sharing of the resources available among the various NATO partners".
The activity of Air Policing has been conducted since the time of peace and consists in the continuous surveillance of the integrity of NATO's airspace and in the identification of possible breaches of integrity, before which appropriate law enforcement actions must take place, such as for example, the rapid take-off of interceptor fighter aircraft, which in technical terms is called scramble.Air Policing is carried out within the area of responsibility of the Allied Command Operation (ACO) station in Brussels and is coordinated by Ramstein's Air Command (GER).
The persistent threat from Russia, in the last period has become more concrete ... and Iceland is afraid of a Russian retaliation against its capital city of ReyKjavik.
We have to defend Iceland airspace and especially its city.
