History:
The legendary origin of the city of Pagan (today Bagan) is reported by the Chronicle of the Crystal Palace. In the second century, nineteen villages, each with their own genius, would have united their political, economic and religious forces. A couple of geniuses, a brother and a sister, would have been chosen to become the protectors of the city. A temple is built for them on Mount Popa, and worship has continued to be rendered to them since then. During the domination of the Pyu kingdom of Sri Ksetra (~ 200 BC-1050), the Bamas, belonging to the Burmese ethnic group, had started to infiltrate the center of Burma, then occupied by Pyus under the influence of Buddhism mahāyāna of Bengal and Bihar. In 849, Pagan (known today as Bagan) had emerged as the capital of a powerful kingdom that would unify Burma and fill the political space abandoned by the Pyus. The kingdom grew in relative isolation, until the reign of Anawrahta (1044 - 1078), who converted to Theravada Buddhism and unified Burma by his victory over the Mon of Thaton in 1057. His power was strengthened under his successors Kyanzittha (1084-1113) and Alaungsithu (1113-1167): in the middle of the 13th century most of the Indochinese peninsula was under the control, either of the kingdom of Pagan, or of the Khmer empire. The kingdom is then financed by direct taxes and obligations of services for the villages, directed by the myothugis (heads of municipality). Over time, more and more land was given to Buddhist monasteries, then transformed into villages dedicated to the maintenance of the sangha (clergy). Royalty is legitimized both by religious ideology and the king's role as defender of the faith. Irrigation of the Kyaukse plain, east of Pagan, ensures prosperity through rice production. The region also benefits from its place at the crossroads of land and sea trade between South China, India and the other countries of Southeast Asia. The kingdom of Pagan began to decline as more and more land fell into the hands of non-taxable Buddhist monasteries, and the Mongols began to threaten its northern borders. The last true king of Pagan, Narathihapati (reign of 1254 to 1287), felt able to resist the Mongols and advanced in the Kingdom of Dali (current province of Yunnan) in 1277 to face them. It was completely crushed at the Battle of Ngasaunggyan, and Pagan's resistance collapsed. Narhatipati was assassinated by one of his sons in 1287, which precipitated the invasion of the Mongols and the capture of the capital (Battle of Pagan). Pagan could never regain his preeminence. The Mongols placed a puppet ruler on his throne and the country quickly fragmented.
