And now a bit of history:
Tartan (also known as plaid in North America) is a criss-crossed pattern of horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours. It is mostly associated with Scotland, however it has been used in other regions as well and has been identified to have existed even as early as 3000 years ago.
In Scotland it is found mostly on kilts and as a kilt accessory, slung over the shoulder.
In 1782, it was adopted as the symbolic national dress of Scotland.
