Brief History Lesson

The Audi quattro made its debut in 1980 as a course car on the Algarve rally, and immediately started to turn heads, even though it wasn’t competing, if it had, it would have beaten the second fastest car by a fair margin (multiple sources have different numbers) This was made possible by the revolutionary Quattro all-wheel drive system. This system allowed power to get to all four wheels without a heavy, clunky transfer case. What they did was make the transmission output shaft hollow and run another shaft through the middle to power the front wheels. Audi continued to dominate the rally sector, especially after the introduction of group B, where most restrictions were lifted. This led to heavy modifications to the car including, but not limited to, a foot being taken out of the wheelbase and an even more powerful engine. But in 1986 group B was ended due to safety concerns after several crashes. After that Audi shifted its attention to circuit racing, and although there is a bunch of stuff to know about it, this is where the UR Quattro’s part of the story ends. (UR was the name given to it later, translated and abbreviated to original)

Drivetrain

This car is powered by a small engine through an eight-speed automatic gearbox I made for this car, and you will most likely see other variants of it in more cars to come. I attempted to do some clever stuff with the diff, but while it made it unbelievably fast turning in to corners, it was also impossible to drive in a straight line. While a manual toggle system worked very well, it seemed too intrusive on the driving and I couldn’t figure out a way to smoothly automate it and, made the decision to leave it out. The gearbox is fully automatic gearbox, meaning all you have to do is turn the key and press W and S, if there is demand for me to put in a manual I will. You may notice the steering snap in the other direction briefly after a turn, all that is, is the car counter steering so you don’t have to. I find it nice, but some people may find it intrusive. It will go a bit over 200 kp/h, while that is slower than the real thing, if I change the aero arrangement, it will either wheelie or flip.

Other stuff

I did not call it a quattro because that would be meaning recreating something historical perfectly, and I did not, at least by my standard. The shell is a heavily modified version of a car utopian has not completed yet, but I will say that it will be just as fast as this car. Also, if you notice the gearbox very briefly glitch out between fifth and sixth gear, I don’t know why, and have spent hours looking for the problem. If you find it, feel free to tell me in the comments.
