Description
Verne Gagne was a former 10-time AWA World Heavyweight Champion who has been inducted into the WWE, WCW, and Professional Wrestling Halls of Fame.

Gagne had an amateur background - he was an alternate on the US freestyle wrestling team at the 1948 Summer Olympics. He was also drafted by the Chicago Bears, but was forced into making a choice between football and pro wrestling by Bears owner and coach George Halas. Gagne chose wrestling and embarked on a spectacular career.

In 1949, Gagne started wrestling for the NWA. After holding the NWA Junior Heavyweight and United States titles, Gagne had a chance to fight for a disputed NWA World Heavyweight Championship in 1958. He defeated Edouard Carpentier to win the belt that was recognized by some territories as the World Title.

A few years later, Gagne left the NWA to form his own promotion, the AWA. The AWA claimed that Gagne would become the World Champion if then NWA Champ Pat O'Connor didn't take on Gagne, and when the match didn't happen, Gagne claimed his first AWA World Championship.

Gagne remained a featured attraction for years as well as serving as the booker until the company closed in 1991.
