The Bog Pit is a fictional coal mine found in the Australian outback. The mine has its own dedicated railroad used to move coal out of the open-pit mine and across the outback. The Bog Pit use to even have a dedicated passenger service known as "The Bog" which took workers and tourists alike to and from the mine.

The passenger service was in great demand during the rise of coal mining in the region, when tourists from around the country would visit multiple mines in the region as part of an "industrial safari". Workers still made up the majority of passengers.

As time passed the industrial boom in the region became less of a spectacle and tourism numbers reduced. At this stage the number of workers using the passenger service was not enough to warrant keeping the service alive, so eventually the locally renowned "The Bog" stopped running.
You can still see the old F7 units rusting away in the sidings outside the mine.

The Bog Pit uses a fleet of DX diesels to move the loaded coal wagons away from the mine and across the outback to larger cities on the Australian coasts.

Inside the Bog Pit itself, there is a steep rack-rail line which is used to move coal up and out of the mine. The railroad purchased two rare "side-rod" locomotives designed to climb the unique rack-rail track.

Since there were only two, these Side-Rod locos were given nicknames: Igor and Grichka.

The Bog Pit continues to export coal day-in day-out, and makes a steady profit from the rich coal deposits deep in the pit. The gone but not forgotten "The Bog" F7s still rest on a derelict siding outside the mine, and may one day be restored to good condition for historic value.
