Torihatsu sought to innovate and pioneer new technology in the economical car market among their streak of sportier cars. The company was not equipped for the job, however, and the EVolution was not only faced with many issues from the gate; difficult maintenance, bad practicality from two seats and very short storage space since the car's oversized EV system took up much of the rear. But the electric motor and battery system's size would be the least of it's problems; the car, on occasion, would face a catastrophic failure that would cause the car to ignite. This ruined the car's reputation, as well as other hybrids, Torihatsu faced much legal and public backlash.
