The map is a small scale depiction of the area known as McPherson and Seminary Ridges on July 1st, 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg. The battle began on Herr ridge, just at the west edge of the map as Confederate forces of A.P. Hill's III Corps pressed toward the town. Union Cavalry under Gen. John Buford stood their ground for hours, awaiting the arrival of Gen. John Reynolds' I Corp, led by the Iron Brigade. The map features all of the major areas defended by Buford and Reynolds men and portions of the ground over which Gen. Richard Ewell's II Corps crushed Union XI Corps just north of the town.
