NIRVANA: Act 1 - EVENTIDE

Description
REQUIRED MOD DEPENDENCY

JM'S EFFECT IS A REQUIRED MOD BUT IT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE ON THE STEAM WORKSHOP. YOU CAN FIND IT HERE AS A LOCAL MOD: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10frjAYO9zQHzxZqffTdUZtYICPS1ihO5/view

CURRENT STATUS OF THIS CAMPAIGN AND PLANNED SEQUEL

ggazso: I am currently working as a lawyer, so I have limited time and energy to maintain this campaign and work on its sequel, Nirvana Act 2: Kindling. Work on these campaigns has resumed, but is moving at a very slow pace as my schedule permits. Eventually the plan is to re-release this campaign together with Act 2 in a single mod for ease of use/access.

Xen: As of January 2025, this campaign is still "playable" as long as the JM's Effect Mod is installed (provided in the Google Drive link above) alongside the other listed dependencies available on the Workshop. Please comment below if you encounter any horrendous bugs or issues so we may fix them once we get around to updating it.

WARNING

THIS CAMPAIGN MAKES USE OF ELEMENTS THAT MAY POTENTIALLY TRIGGER SEIZURES FOR PEOPLE WITH PHOTOSENSITIVE EPILEPSY (FLASHING LIGHTS, HUD ICONS, AND IMAGES). PLAYER/VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.

SUMMARY

Nirvana is a science-fiction story set in the year 2156 during the slow economic collapse of a society called the United Nations of Earth, the sole power in the Solar System. As the tensions between its four planetary Constituent Nations rise to deadly heights, a controversial project is being developed by powerful figures in the UNE.

This campaign is a love-letter to hard-science fiction stories like Mass Effect, the Expanse, Freespace 2, and Blue Planet. Eventide follows Lieutenant Christopher Graham as he joins Captain Sean Gibson's Foxtrot Squad right as their lives becomes intertwined with bloody events that change the fate of Earth and the worlds of Mars, Venus, and Jupiter.

We Ourselves Must Walk The Path

FEATURES

  • Eight fully voice-acted missions including a mission on the Lunar surface
  • Skippable tutorial that covers custom features
  • Fully voice-acted cutscenes
  • Custom main menu "mission" with functioning mission selection, database and credits
  • Deep lore and recurring characters
  • Custom HUD with integrated compass, ammo/health tracking and more
  • Animated briefings before missions
  • Collectibles such as articles, audio files and secrets sprinkled throughout missions
  • Curated soundtrack comprised of existing work and a few custom tracks.

DISCLAIMERS

This campaign makes use of horror elements in Missions 4 and 8.

Some characters may use and die with weapons from the Apex, Contact, or other DLCs. To pick those up, you will have to own the required DLC on Steam, however no content from any Creator DLC is used.

Due to Arma-jank, it is recommended that you wait for ALL squad-mates to enter a vehicle before entering yourself to prevent soft-locks. As of 2025, some fixes have been implemented to address this, but caution is nevertheless advised.

INSTALLATION

Simply subscribe to the campaign and load it as you would a mod, alongside the required modset (including JM's Effect, which is not *officially* on the Steam Workshop.) Once in-game, go to to Singleplayer -> Campaigns -> NIRVANA: EVENTIDE and play the menu mission. It is recommended to always go to the menu mission and start/continue the campaign from there.

MOD COMPATIBILITY

It is strongly recommended that you only play with the required mods as any other mod may break the campaign or introduce incompatible mechanics. Using mods like ACE or Project Injury Reaction *will* mess with the stability of the missions. The only exceptions are mods such as JSRS, Blastcore, or Bloodlust as these do not change the systems, just the FX or visuals (although they might affect performance.)

FUTURE PLANS

Nirvana: Eventide is the first act out of a planned total of FOUR. We're almost finished with Act 2 - Kindling, an even more ambitious campaign with a total of fourteen main story missions, six hub missions, custom environments, and much more dialogue. Act 2 will possess a fully-realized conversation system similar to most RPGs (Fallout, Mass Effect, The Walking Dead, etc), where your decisions and interactions will affect the future result of the story down the line and change the way other characters move in the story.

Any fans of Eventide that have been patient and are hopefully as excited for Kindling as we've been, thank you. It means a lot that you've played this, and we hope to improve Eventide as we drop both campaigns (eventually). It's been hard making progress, but we're proud of what Act 2 will bring in terms of polish and originality, as well as commentary.

KNOWN ISSUES

  • Cutscenes may be obscenely loud for unknown reasons. A future update will cut the volume in the source files by half to compensate.

  • The custom HUD was designed before I had full knowledge of the Pixel Grid system, so the interface may not work properly unless you have your interface size set to 'very small.' The UI is also designed for widescreen, and will look strange on ultrawide and other aspect ratios. These issues will be addressed as part of a comprehensive UI rework coming with Act 2.

  • Due to Nirvana using Arma 3 in ways it was perhaps not intended for, it is likely that some things may break or behave unpredictably as time goes on. Please do not hesitate to point out these issues so that they may be fixed ASAP.

  • The overview picture for the campaign in the Campaign menu may not show sometimes.

SPECIAL THANKS

  • Justin T. Rico for playtesting and providing exhaustive QA notes.
  • All our friends who kindly provided their voice talents.
  • Bohemia Interactive for providing such an infinitely-customizable sandbox experience.
  • Volition for creating FreeSpace 2, which served both as inspiration and a platform to create Nirvana's space-based cutscenes.
  • The FreeSpace 2: Blue Planet team for creating one of the best user-made stories ever and serving as the main inspiration for this campaign.
  • Adobe for providing the tools I used day in and day out.
  • Article 2 Studios for Operation: Trebuchet.
  • JMax and The Opposition Team for ME: Opposition, aka JM's Effect
  • Polpox, Bushlurker, Goschie and Alias for their helpful mods, maps and scripts, respectively.
  • All the people who've played Eventide and given us notes and bug reports.

I just finished M8. Well done!

The invisible bridge part no longer works as the blocks have lost their textures and are now visible. I'm assuming this is the same issue for where Graham is in the orb hub as the ground is visible with the same texture.

Regardless, M8 has left me more invested into the story. Keep it up!

@simplified We pushed several fixes today to address the crashes you've been experiencing. Mission 8 should be fully playable now, although unexpected bugs may still crop up here and there. Once Act 2 is completed we will conduct a thorough polish pass on Act 1 to bring it up to Act 2's standards.

In any case, I'm glad you enjoyed what you played so far! Your recent comment actually gave me a nice jolt of motivation to resume work on the campaign :)

Well, I've reached M8 and there seems to be one more problem. Not sure if it has anything to do with the NIRVANA mod itself or Ryan's Zombies and Demons. Whenever the mission is loading up, Arma crashes midway through and it spits out File ryanzombies\playercontrolled\model.cfg, line 23: /CfgSkeletons/: Missing "}"

However, despite this mod's age and how changes have weathered it down a bit, I have to say again that I've really enjoyed the campaign so far. It holds up pretty well and functions as intended up until M8. Nevertheless, you've got me hooked and I can't wait for next 3 acts.

Cheers!

@simplified oh damn, we'll definitely look into the UI then. it might just be the HUD mods cause Nirvana-Arma isn't always stable even without extra mods.

sadly, that bug in M6 is really consistent on my end too. i'm going to try and emergency-patch it tomorrow so you can at least finish the campaign.

thanks once again for the detailed feedback :)

@Xen No, my monitor is 1920x1080 so VCAS shouldn't be facing issues in that regard. As for M6 (and I think maybe M2 as well), when entering a vehicle before all of the AI have gotten back in, they tend to dismount and never get back in, softlocking the game. I have only played through the mission once, so there may be more softlock opportunities I have missed, but this is the only consistent one I have ran into so far.
Xen  [author] 12 Jan @ 6:15pm
@simplified thanks for the feedback. are you using an ultrawide monitor by any chance? VCAS (the custom UI in general) was designed for 1920x1080 screens, so there's a bunch of issues with the interface that have to be fixed. im just curious about your setup since @ggazso also runs into issues from time to time using ultrawide.

unfortunately, this means we need to completely rework VCAS, so it'll probably only get updated once Act 2 drops. as for compatibility with the DUI SR mod, i'll look into it myself and see if that's what breaks the UI.

really glad you enjoyed the campaign :) have you been able to get past M6? sometimes the game soft-locks in that scenario.
