To note: A crash can happen if you pick the Secret Shoes in the first level as a different character than regular Sam. For that level only, play as regular Sam, then after proceeding to the next one, you can switch characters just fine.

Other things to note:
-A crash can happen if you load a level that has a bunch of mods that may have been uninstalled or replaced, but the fix is simply to begin the level in question through the New Game option, then you can load your save fine.
-Despite being mostly cosmetic, a crash can happen if you load a save as a different character it was previously saved as (only possible with the mod "Play as Multiplayer Characters in Single-Player"). Simply pick the character it was previously saved as, load the save, then you can switch characters and even reload that save just fine. It also seems that, if the above trick may not work, you can load a save as normal Serious Sam, it fixes the problem for when you load other saves in that session for some reason; do that, then you can play as any characters and load any saves without a problem.
