Jenkins, that's a wire, not a spring.

Maxsta, you need to use snd_updateaudiocache to resolve the sound glitch you're having. L4D and L4D2 use a sound cache system and if a sound is suddenly not in sync with what's in the cache file, problems will occur.

Has anyone else heard the sound glitch a second after firing the gun?

Damn shame that this could've been nearly exactly like the CS:S one, but nope, spring.

That 'springy thing' on the left side of the gun is a coiled wire for a pressure pad activation switch for the flashlight. Notice that it comes from the back of the flashlight down to the grip area. This is so that one can keep a firing grip on the gun and still activate the light only as needed. It's a tacticool thang! :)
