English Electric Lightning

The English Electric Lightning was a British high speed interceptor. It remains the only British aircraft to reach Mach 2. It was also one of the first aircraft capable of supercruise, and completely vertical flight. First flying in 1954, it was designed to intercept Soviet bombers, though was also capable of being a fighter and ground attack aircraft. It was know for its exceptional rate of climb, speed, and its unique vertically stacked engines. It was officially retired from British service in 1988.
