The Blue Angels are a Flight Demonstration Squadron for the United States Navy. Formed in 1946 the Blue Angels are the second oldest Aerial Demonstration Squadron under the same name. The Blue Angels began with the F6F Hellcat switching to the F8F Bearcat shortly after. After the F8F the team entered the jet era flying the straight wing F9F Panther. They switched to the F9F Cougar swept wing fighter in 1955. Eventually the team would begin flying the F11F Tiger (They loved their grumman aircraft) ushering them into the Supersonic age. In 1969 the team switched to the F-4 Phantom II marking the first time the team flew something not Grumman related and the only time they flew the same aircraft as the Air Force Thunderbirds. Due to an oil crisis the team switched to the A-4 Skyhawk in 1974. The team transitioned to the F/A-18 Hornet in 1986 and have flown the aircraft for 34 years. The team will be transitioning to the F/A-18 Super Hornet in 2021.
