Northern Graphics Extended

Description
This mod adds a new, less continental-style castle graphic in the holding interface for all cultures in the British Isles and Scandinavia (except English). Most cultures in the British Isles also now use the Northern graphical culture, affecting their clothing and (for Anglo-Saxons) the appearance of units on the map.

I was originally going to add this to my Anglo-Saxons Use Norse Graphics mod (which has been fully integrated into this) but, since it makes some considerable changes to the game files, I thought I'd upload it separately as not to negatively impact the other's compatibility.

Currently, there are only 4 distinct graphical cultures in the game (Western, Mediterranean, Mena/Muslim & Indian) and they all depict castles that are made entirely from stone. The cultures of the British Isles and Scandinavia, especially in the earlier period of the game, traditionally constructed fortifications from wood with the few stone defences generally being inherited from the Roman era. It was only following the arrival of the Normans in England that such continental-style stone castles were first constructed in the region in any significant number.

Every culture in the West Germanic (except English), North Germanic, Brythonic (except Breton) and Goidelic culture groups now use northern clothing and castle graphics. I'm also open to suggestions for other cultures or culture groups to be included.

Frisian has been moved from the Central Germanic to the West Germanic heritage. It has also been added as a second parent culture of Anglo-Saxon for historical reasons. They have also been given the full northern european treatment, now using northern building, clothing and unit graphics.

This mod does NOT affect the castle holding 3D map model. But, with the addition of new graphics in the Northern Lords DLC, affected cultures should now use wooden castle graphics on the campaign map!

Compatibility
Will reliably be compatible with any mod, so long as it doesn't edit the same cultures. Even if it does, it'll likely just override the changes made in this mod (or the conflicting mod, depending on the load order of the files) and shouldn't lead to any stability issues.

✔️ Savegame compatible - Game may warn you otherwise but, from my experience, this doesn't appear to be true and saves made before enabling this mod will load without issue. Of course, as in vanilla, it won't be compatible with saves made before Royal Court and the recent culture revamp.

❌ Ironman compatible.

NOTE: The original image used to create this mod's custom castle graphic can be found HERE[www.deviantart.com].

Does this mod work fully with the fallen eagle mod, castle graphics have changed but not the unit ones :(

@DL - Yeah, it's pretty easy. All you should need to do is copy the entry for the Finnish and Sami cultures in the game files and paste them into this mod's custom culture file. After that, replace whatever is listed in their building_gfx entry with norse_building_gfx and that should be it.

If you're not experienced with modding and/or not sure how to do this then let me know and I'll be happy to post a more detailed guide.

Ive used your mod since it came out. Love it. I have an issue with Finnish and Sami cultures using stone castles. Is there a way to include them in the wooden castle graphics as well?

Continuing on from the post below, the mod structure has been optimised so that it should now be compatible with most mods. Avoid ones that edit any of the same cultures and you shouldn't have any issues.

Unfortunately it is still incompatible with achievements. This is because the mod still needs to edit certain files for it to work and thus cannot be changed/fixed.

This mod has been updated and should now work with Royal Court .

Minor changes have been made to Old Saxon, giving them northern unit sprites and generally switiching their graphics to a Scandinavian/Northern European selection.

Frisian has been switched from a Central Germanic to a West Germanic heritage and now uses northern unit sprites and clothing, as well as northern buildings.

Frisian has been added as an additional parent culture for Anglo-Saxon. Historically, it is generally accepted that Frisians made up a sizeable portion of Germanic settlers in England during the Migration Period and the West Frisian language is the closest living relative of English (aside from Scots).

I noticed that the divergent cultures of Norse (Danish, Norwegian and Swedish) now use Continental European graphics. If people want me to switch them back to northern graphics, let me know and I'll add it to the mod.

@Slumcut - I'd originally just found it through Google Images and left it at that, but I just did a bit of reverse searching with the original image (the one seen here has been flipped and heavily cropped) and it appears to be from here [www.deviantart.com] originally. I've added it to the description for people who want to view the original in all its glory and support the creator.

Alrighty, the mod should now be compatible with the latest version (1.3).

Luckily, now that the Scandinavian cultures have their own building graphics, the mod structure is much simpler (thus smaller file size) now since I can just utilise a vanilla graphical culture instead of having to create a whole new one. Although I have still opted to keep the old wooden castle design since (like @constantin) I prefer it to the vanilla one.

With northern-themed vanilla assets now in the game, this means that the Anglo-Saxons and Celts will now use the new wooden building models (and new northern ambient sounds!) on the map instead of the generic Western European ones. Towns also now use the new northern graphic in the province interface instead of the default one it used before.

Other than this, all other graphical changes (such as clothing and unit models) should be as they were in the previous version.

Hope you all enjoy these additions and apologies for the delay!
