Description

The Mughal Empire was one of the largest and most influential polities in Indian, and indeed world, history - dominating the subcontinent throughout the early modern period. After being founded by a Timurid prince in the early 1500s, the Empire and its Muslim aristocracy soon grew to encompass most of the Indian subcontinent, from Afghanistan to Bangladesh and stretching deep into southern India. Aurangzeb, often considered the last of the 'Great Mughals' - a series of incredibly powerful and competent emperors which guided the empire to its zenith around the 17th century. A fiercely pious ruler, Aurangzeb devoted much of his life to the study of Islamic law, culminating in the 'Fatawa Alamgiri', a law code written by the emperor - a work considered one of the greatest works of Islamic jurisprudence. Despite his scholarly leanings, Aurangzeb was also a fierce conqueror and adept administrator, subjugating much of the Deccan plain and bringing the Mughal Empire to its greatest extent: an Empire of over 150 million people with a revenue ten times that of France. Aurangzeb's legacy is a complicated one however, as his fierce religiosity and attempts to institute shariah law alienated the Empire's large Hindu majority. Following his death in 1711, the empire entered a state of decline before it was effectively abolished by the British in 1857.
