Animation Overhaul Mod - Crafting
Tattoos Integrated
When the animation system got extended to include more granular control of who and what use animations in the FCS (Forgotten Construction Set), depending on how the skeleton files (which contain a mods animations) are located and subsequently loaded, crashes may occur when a custom animation is called prior to the character itself actually loading. This happens enough to be a problem. Some animation mods aren't aware of OGRE 3D's loading procedure. Luckily, there are several easy workarounds in Kenshi to avoid this issue.

In the case of Animation Overhaul Mod - Crafting
Copy the mod from your workshop location (steamapps\workshop\content\(one of these folders)\1630760930) to your Kenshi/Mods folder.
Rename 1630760930 to AnimationOverhaul. Make folders and move the files from the animation folder to them (male animations go in AnimationOverhaul\character\meshes\male_skeleton, female is self explanatory), load the mod in the FCS, click "changes" on the top, and edit the two "ANIMATION_FILE" types to point to where the new male and female skeleton files are located. Save, unsubscribe (I don't know whether workshop files take priority over local files but I think it does), and that's it!


The long explanation
Some of the mods that add new animations have stability issues, the problem relates to the structure and folder where the animation-files are located.
Basically, if you match the hierarchy with the same formatting where the vanilla animation is located, you will no longer crash, provided this is the cause of your crash.

The game will merge the contents and structure of your mod folder with that of the base game during run-time.
The folder in the MOD is merged under "kenshi/data/", you can do as follows:
[your_mod_folder]/character/meshes/(fe)male_skeleton/[your_skeleton.skeleton]

This has the same meaning as put under "kenshi/data/character/meshes/(fe)male_skeleton/[your_skeleton.skeleton]".

Note: All MOD files will be merged under "kenshi/data/", so you need to give it a unique file name to avoid overwriting.
Here is what the game will do:
load base skeleton male_skeleton.skeleton
merge mod skeleton which is now in the same directory do to the matching structure (Virtually, during run time)
AOM_ANIMATION_male.skeleton
merge mod skeleton Immersive non-combat Animations Male done.skeleton
If an animation is properly trimmed, (Most are) animations packed into a skeleton will not overwrite animations from another mod, provided that mod does not change the same animations. This should also not affect changes to the rig.

Why does this happen?

OGRE(3D-engine) has its own resource manager, and animation files must be registered there. It is set in "kenshi/resources.cfg".
If a file in the folder set there is requested, OGRE will load it before using it.

Note: Data related to the character is set under "[Characters]" entry in resources.cfg. OGRE will not automatically search sub-directories.

If there is a animation file other than the registered folder, the file will be load by kenshi.exe itself in a separate thread.
In this case, it is okay if it can be load in time, but it will crash if used before the load is finished.
So it's more prone to crashing if loading and playing happen at the same time.
For example, if a race/sex that doesn't appear in this game (= not loaded yet) is playing an additional animation in the house, it will often crash the moment you enter the house.

I have several different mods I am testing, but the following load order (Which can be imported as a .cfg by the Kenshi Mod Manager) is what I currently use. Load order determines overwrite and conflict priorities.

I'm still learning and exploring but this is what I currently use.
The issue with mods which add items to shop keepers and equipment spawns to NPCs is that some of them do not realize when you have a high percentage relative to the total items a vendor can have (Or a high percentage a specific NPC will spawn with a certain item), you reduce the chance other items will spawn. The only annoying item (As far as I know) with my mod list would be research blueprints for the training overhaul.
