City II

Description
City II is a singleplayer map from 22/08/1996 by Jean-Marc Gruninger.
Deathmatch is also implented, but as it is REALLY big it's only recommended for 7-8 players...

It is a rather huge and long city map taking place on an island.
I originally got this map back in the days from a French video game magazine cd which used to be my main source of usermaps.

This map is far from perfect. It has its flaws, like the lack of wall shading, the simple texturing at times, and the misaligned textures at times as well.
However, for an early 1996 map (it was released only a few months after Duke3D's release), it is REALLY REALLY good. First, the scale is enormous and you can explore everything. There is also tons of effects and cool stuff especially for 1996, like a building with tons of SoS floors : you can visit every floor inside but also the rooftop. There is a scalfolding made of sprites and cool explosions throughout. Some places look better than others, as if the mapper improved while he was making the map.

The map is quite long, it should take almost half an hour to complete. Once you get the jetpack, I recommend you to explore before going into the building invaded by aliens because there are two 'secret' places you can find with the jetpack that look really good.

TL;DR : a really good and long map from 1996. If shading and texturing had been improved, it would have been great.

This map is very special. Not the prettiest map but not ugly at all. The gameplay is really good. I loved the first tall building that had several floors.

No I haven't. I actually didn't check every corner on the street level, so that's why I had that issue with the RPG later on. I was too busy exploring the buildings. I'll have to give it another go.

Glad to see you enjoyed it, this used to be one of my fav maps back in the days. Have you been inside the boat and found the secret apartment (5th screenshot) ?

I really enjoyed this map. There is plenty of length and challenge to it, and the design is pretty effective, too. I think the level relies a little too much on the RPG near the end, as that's the only ammo you will be able to find where it matters the most (aside from the Devastator at the VERY end). If you don't pick it up earlier in the map, chances are you will need to start the level over unless you're excellent at conserving ammo. There is a long drop that acts as a point of no return unless you have close to 100% of power in your jetpack. So be sure to pick up everything you think you'll need before descending, as this map offers plenty of challenge.

9/10 from me.
