kkStB 289 'LICAON'

Description
The Real Vehicle
The series KFNB VII was rebuilt by the Kaiser Ferdinands-Nordbahn (KFNB) around 1872 from class 1B locomotives with separate tender. The freight locomotives released by the use of a new series were converted to tender locomotives at low cost to counteract the acute shortage of shunting locomotives. For this purpose the water tank was mounted on the boiler as a saddle. 18 machines of this conversion series were still in the inventory of the k.k. Austrian State Railways (kkStB) and were classified as series 289. Half of them were taken over by BBÖ after the First World War, but then either sold or scrapped by 1924.

Engine 289.10, originally built in 1851 as the 'LICAON', was sold to the Stiegl brewery in Salzburg in 1923, where it was used as factory locomotive 'Salzburg 1' until 1937. After completion of the construction work at Linz main station it was placed on a pedestal in front of the railway management as a technical monument in 1958.

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the railway in Austria in 1987, the locomotive was removed from its pedestal in 1985 and restored to an operational condition. In the following years it was used as a museum locomotive on special trips from the Strasshof railway museum. Until its final shutdown in 2004, the 'LICAON' was considered one of the oldest locomotives still in service at 153 years of age. Since the end of its service life, which was caused by material fatigue of the original components, it has been stored in a depot of the Technical Museum Vienna, where it is not accessible.

The Model
This mod contains three different versions of the locomotive, representing different states of the locomotive.

The first variant reflects the situation at the kkStB with the characteristic metal bands on black sheet metal. Noticeable are the still angular edgings of the side cab window openings. This variant is available in the game from 1872 to 1922.

The second variant shows the locomotive as it was in use at the Stiegl brewery. Most striking is the striking spark catcher at the top of the chimney. This indicates that in the time when the locomotive was used as a works locomotive, wood was probably the main fuel used for heating. In addition, the rear side windows were glazed and the curves still visible today were installed at the upper end of the side walls. In contrast to the kkStB version, the locomotive does not carry lanterns and makes a somewhat simpler impression overall. This variant is available in the game from 1923 to 1980.

The third variant is based on the 'LICAON' as a museum locomotive with its striking green livery. Apart from the spark arrester, the top of the saddle tank and the glazing of the side windows were removed. The locomotive was technically adapted to the current requirements and sockets for electric lanterns were installed. This version is available in the game from 1980 to 2004.

All variants have 4 LOD levels (approx. 23,000, 11,000, 3,300 and 500 Tris) and textures created with Substance Painter. Since unfortunately no technical drawings could be found (the Technical Museum Vienna does not have any in its inventory either), images and video clips were used for modelling and texturing to a large extent. Therefore certain deviations from reality are unavoidable.
