G538 G Class - Skeletals (8)

Description
Today none of the G class locomotives in service use their original livery - the fleet was sold off to various logistics companies after the freight division of V/Line was privatised. This recreation presents G538 in its present livery - that of the ALSO defunct Freight Australia, but with a Pacific National logo.

The locomotive pulls a train of 8 skeletal wagons (based on the VQFX wagon) carrying ISO shipping containers in 40' and 20' varieties, liquid tankers, as well as metal coils. These use the Trailer Variation Loader mod to reflect the cargo of the train. It also auto-reverses the locomotive in the direction of travel.

Rather than stick with the "goods" and "materials" distinction I've just referred directly to the kind of wagon they pull. These are the same wagons from my earlier G class trains, shuffled in a different order.

Thanks to Koku - these liveries were a bonus on the G class items that I was keen to make, but you'd have none of them at all without his commission!

G538 (Pacific National)
9,915 / 274 tris
1024x1024 / 64x64 textures

VQFX (base wagon)
3,730 / 166 tris
1024x2048 / 256x128 textures
(Basically all the cargo shares the identical LOD set across every texture type - hopefully this means they should share materials and conserve space in the LOD atlas per LSM)

I think I eventually determined it could have as many as 4 different trailers in the asset. but one of those is the locomotive (hidden until it reverses direction) - two if it's double traction. So basically, if I 'set' the trailer to look a certain way without trailer variation, the train could have up to three distinct trailers, but as many as you want of each.

I originally planned much more complicated consists to have more variation, basically 6 distinct trailers, each with their own variations, for much more diverse trains, but it kept failing - there seemed to be some limit in the game to how many different trailers you can package together, varying or not, which is how I settled on four trailer types split across two trains - the 2 versions of the skeletal trailer, and two versions of the flatbed trailer, and a varying pattern of each. Anything more and the asset broke on save. I spent almost as much time in asset editor and testing in-game and those damned loading screens as I did making it, trying to figure out the problem, it was singularly maddening. I have no plans whatsoever to revisit this challenge.

Have you thought about making a variation with no trailervariation necessary for the 8-10 car trains?
Robert  [author] 6 Feb, 2022 @ 8:26pm
sounds like you need longer train stations

These 8 length trains clog up my train stations because they prevent other trains from escaping.

all mods do :)
no worries, thanks

Me idiot. The trailervariation loader requires activation in the Content Manager. Did not do that.
Great train. Please keep going with this. Very, very nice.

Thank you, glad you like it. You need to subscribe to and activate the Trailer Variation Loader mod listed on the side and mentioned in the description. Each wagon has 8 or 9 submeshes overlapping for different cargo types. With that mod active all but one will be switched to invisible.

The train looks absolutely lovely. Great job.
Is there any chance that i could avoid having the trailers duplicated? This train's container wagons appear twice on top of each other. Fair chance this may be caused by one of my other mods, not sure.
